For me, simplicity has always been the key to successful investing and the time-honored wisdom of Occam’s razor, set forth by the fourteenth-century philosopher and friar William of Occam, has stood me in good stead: “When confronted with multiple solutions to a problem, choose the simplest one.”

One of the most important things I’ve learned after almost 17 years working as a financial advisor is that Cost, Quality & Simple are the absolute foundations of long-term investment success!  I’m amazed at how many investors have no idea what a Basis Point is (it’s 1% of 1%) …. “who’s getting paid what” with regard to their investment expenses & the impact of fees long term.

BrokerCheck is a free tool to research the background and experience of financial brokers, advisers and firms.

  • Costs matter and need to be analyzed.
  • Never look at costs as a percentage. It seems too insignificant. Always look at cost in Basis Points.
  • How many Basis Points does your advisor charge?
  • How many Basis Points do your investments costs?
  • Are there Simple ways to reduce costs?
  • Are there any other fees/expenses annually on your accounts?
  • Investors should know exactly who is getting paid what on their investments.
  • Investors should try to understand, if possible, the quality of their investments.
  • Does the investment have a long track record, ideally 20+ years. Can you see the credentials and experience of the people managing your money?
